BEATRIX AND ME, A TEAM

By

Lavonne Thomas

Obedience is a team competition.  My one and only teammate is my little bulldog, Beatrix.  On Saturday, June 11, 2011 we won our first leg toward her first obedience title.  That weekend was my first time and her first time in an obedience ring.

Last minute instructions             Come on recall                                    Circle eight

To me obedience is an opportunity to go into the ring and have fun with my dog.  We have to follow the judge's directions, think and perform a myriad of tasks in the ring.  Bulldogs can also do Rally.  My bulldog Cedric and I got a title for him in Rally in 2007.

Stand still while the judge touches         Walk with me                                   Beatrix

I personally believe basic obedience is great training for any dog, any breed.  There are several good training centers in Colorado Springs.  I go to Shelley Bergstrasser at Canine Solutions.  Any training center you choose should train with love and treats.  Discipline that is too harsh will be detrimental to your dog, so look for a center where your dog has fun and you will have fun too.  Then, you might choose to go on to obedience or rally competition, or you could just keep playing with your dog.

Lavonne, thank you for sharing your experiences and showing us there are a variety of avenues open to us and our bullies.

As an AKC sanctioned club, the Bulldog Club of Colorado Springs hosts a bulldog specialty show every June.  It is held on a Friday, leading into the all-breed shows on Saturday and Sunday.  Currently, it is held at the Phil Long Expo Center on the north side of Colorado Springs.  The large facility offers close access to I-25, hotels and restaurants, and all the points of interest of the Pike's Peak region. Come see the best of the bulldog breed in the beauty of the Rockies.

We also host puppy matches and B-matches during the year.  It's a wonderful opportunity to get together and show our up-and-coming show prospects in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
